Main Types of 3 Gun Pistols
There are two main types of pistols used in 3 gun: Polymer frame pistols with safeties built into their long trigger pulls, and Metal frame pistols with thumb safeties and very short, crisp, triggers. The main pistol you will see the high end 3 gunners use is the STI 2011. It is a metal frame with a polymer grip, built like a 1911 in regards to trigger components and thumb safeties. This is the best example for the second type of 3 gun pistol – short, crisp trigger, a good amount of recoil absorbing weight, but requires a thumb safety to make safe. The Glock is another platform used regularly with 3 gunners, and is the best example for the second type of 3 gun pistol – long, spongy trigger pull, light weight and therefore more muzzle rise and felt recoil, but does not require any thumb safety to make the pistol safe.
We recommend using a Polymer frame pistol (Glock, M&P, XD, etc) that do not require a safety for beginners. The lack of a thumb safety allows the user to shoot without having to worry about making the gun safe. However, if you are already well versed with a 1911, the 2011 may be the platform for you.
Another thing to consider when choosing a 3 gun pistol is cost. A $500 Glock with $25 magazines will get the job done just fine for the majority of shooters. In comparison, a $2000 STI with $100 magazines is kind of the base level for getting into that side of the game.
Regardless of the pistol platform you settle on, make sure you get magazines that hold a significant round count when loaded to your division capacity. Tac Ops allows 140mm magazines, so get extensions for your magazines that allow 4-6 more rounds per mag while still under the 140mm limit.
